The last weekend in October we had our Rippers Freestyle Wave Camp, hosted at West Wittering Windsurfing Club with Sam Ross and Rossco Moore.
The weekend kicked off early Saturday morning and the concept is a mixture of fitness, freestyle technique and wave sailing technique. Sam Ross who is one of the most energetic instructors in the UK delivered the course with Rossco from X-train.
The group was warmed up then did dry land drills and then spent the rest of the time out on the water as the wind picked up and the tide changed developing new skills to take their windsurfing to the next level.
On the second day of the course, Julian Du Vall and Trevor Funnell from the UKWA came over and explained how Freestyle Comps worked, judging, about starts and competition zones and held a “mini comp” on Sunday afternoon in pretty light and difficult conditions.
Jamie Drummond, Adam Sims were on hand over the weekend inspiring the new crew with reasons why you should take up windsurfing to a higher level. James Randall also helped with the judging at the mini event.
A big thanks to Chris Rainbow, James Randall, Rossco Moore, Sam Ross, Trevor Funnell and Julian Du Vall; also thanks to Ion, Seasprite and 2XS who gave us some goodies to hand out.
Next years date: 27/28 October 2012 – if you like what you see, get yourself booked on!!!! Contact: [email protected]
Holly Bassett has put together this video which really sums up the action and fun we had over the weekend.
We are running a Rippers Freestyle wave camp 29th-30th October at West Wittering beach.
It is designed for young guns who can plane on their short boards and waterstart who are looking to develop skills to take them to next level.
The course will be full-on and fun for the 2 days with early starts and will incorporate:
-developing new manoeuvres
-learning about competing in wave and freestyle
-fitness-mental focus
-kit tuning
-technique and a mini comp on the second day.
There will be a push to try new manoeuvres and develop the next techniques and drills to take your windsurfing forward. We hope to inspire the next level of freestyle wave sailors.
We will be having some guest stars inc Jamie Drummond, Adam Simms and others to turn up during the weekend to chat about there competition experience and give some advice. Sam Ross (PWA freestyle judge top freestyle sailor and RYA coach) will taking the rippers course, along with X-train Team Chris Rainbow, Roscoe Moore ,Simon Bassett.
There will be still photos and video analysis. If there is a shortage of wind we will concentrate on developing light wind skills-fitness and SUP and equipment tuning. Saturday

Emile’s Backlooping Clinic is back! After a very successful course last year, I am looking for those who are thinking about rotations or have started going for them. If you are nailing your floaty jumps and are ready to step up to the next level with video coaching and the utmost personal attention, then this course is for you!
As well as going through the move in detail, we will look at common problems like under-rotating, over-rotating and how and when to bail out. I have just bought a new waterproof camera, so many of your attempts will be captured in wonderful HD footage for anaysis and you to take away with you at the end of the day.
I am an RYA level 5 (advanced plus) instructor and have spent the last 14 years teaching windsurfing in UK, Greece, Spain, Egypt, Brazil and Cape Verde.
The course will run on the first day with good conditions out of 9th, 10th, 23rd or 24th October. The start time will be announced once the day is chosen but will be early morning for sure. The course costs £120 and this includes at least 5 hours of coaching, a hot shower and tea and coffee at West Wittering Windsurf Club.
If you want to talk it through, please call me (Emile) on 07846 611 618
Peter Hart’s jump and loop course yesterday coincided with pretty much perfect jumping conditions – 18-22 knot side-shore westerlies and sun! Everyone got decent air and Mark Perkins (see pic), who’d travelled up from Hastings gave that old trigger a proper pull and got three-quarters of the way round a few times – that’s a ‘loo ..’ then? “Mark said: “I could believe the conditions at WW – where I sail, when you bear away to get a jump, there’s just nothing there. But today there were little stunt ramps everywhere. I can’t believe I nearly got round – what a day!”
Peter will be running some more spontaneous days in October on the strength of the forecast. Check http://www.peter-hart.com/ and the x-train site for details.

The first thing that you may have noticed is that being a new sport, no one has actually fixed a name for it. You may see it called SUP, SUPing, stand up paddling, stand up paddle surfing, paddlesurfing, paddleboarding, stand up paddleboarding: it’s all the same thing!
I want to have a go
There are a number of places in the UK to try paddlesurfing. It is a great idea to start with a lesson that will take you through the basics of the sport. It is important to learn at a BSUPA recognized club. A course include:
• Where and how to stand on the board
• How to hold the paddle • Safety • How to turn around • How to paddle
A great place to start is at X-Train, West Wittering. We offer a Learn to Paddlesurf Course covering everything mentioned above. It lasts 2 hours and costs £45. We provide all the equipment, including a hot shower and tea / coffee. All you need to bring is a towel! X-Train is run by Simon Bassett who is a BSUPA head coach. As well as running paddlesurf courses, X-Train trains BSUPA instructors.
Why Paddlesurf in West Wittering
West Wittering is one of the most scenic beaches on the South Coast. Placed right next to the mouth of Chichester Harbour, it offers stunning views across to Hayling Island and is the only beach with white, soft, clean sand for miles around!
West Wittering is ideal for learning to SUP. The sandbars create tidal lagoons so that complete novices can go through the basics of the sport without having to worry about waves throwing them off the stand up board.
Chichester Harbour was designed to be explored by paddleboard. It is probably one of the most relaxing things you can do in the area. The peacefulness from the water really does make you wonder if you are in fact in the UK!
Once you have progressed past the basics and are ready to catch some waves, the sandbars in West Wittering once again can come in handy. At high tide, when there is a decent swell, the sandbars provide perfect paddleboard waves that are ideal for getting to grips with basic riding and turning.
Why is everyone taking up Paddleboarding?
Most importantly, paddlesurfing is not anywhere near as condition dependent as other sports. For windsurfing and kitesurfing you need wind, for surfing you need waves, but paddlesurfing can be done in flat water, waves, wind or no wind. This means that it lends itself very well to the UK’s changeable weather conditions!
The boards are fairly large and so it’s easy to learn the basics without taking too many dunkings. Also, the large size makes it easy to catch very small waves – once again, perfect for the UK!
Paddlesurfing gets you very fit. The paddling motion gives you a great core workout – when you come in after a long session, you can definitely feel it, and let’s face it, it’s a lot more fun than going to the Gym!
You don’t need much equipment: 1 board, 1 paddle, 1 wetsuit, done! Compare that to windsurfing: board, sail, mast , boom, extension, base, harness, wetsuit, not to mention lots of rope, footstraps etc…. This keeps paddleboarding affordable.
What size board do I need to start?
It helps to start on a fairly large board (around 12 foot) – the 11’0 NSP at £425 for instance is a great choice. Don’t think for a second that these large boards don’t perform – the shaping makes them very agile in the biggest of waves!
What paddle should I get?
Full carbon paddles like the Kialoa shaka pu’u are great. They are very stiff, light and offer a lot of performance to your paddling. However, you can save quite a lot of money when you start if you go for an alloy paddle like an Ainsworth paddle at £55.
Emile Kott (Level 5 instructor, Boards Magazine tester and 2XS team rider) has announced his summer 2010 courses. The courses are unique, in that they only run if the conditions are there. This means you won’t be doing light wind forwards, backies and carve gybes!Get in touch early to avoid disapointment! To book or for more information, please call 01243 513 077.
